[...] And it gets even more exotic: super-rich families hold a lot of forest. Because they have inherited them, like the Fuggers or the von Thurn & Taxis, or because they have made new investments. Forestry yields manageable returns, but enough to counteract inflation. However, large areas are required for forests to pay off as an investment . The minimum is 75 hectares. This corresponds to the size of around 104 soccer pitches. At a market price of 1.50 euros per square meter, that would be a total of 1.1 million euros. According to the AGDW forest owners' association, at least 250 hectares are needed to make a living from the forest. "Some investors are currently buying up forest areas that have been damaged by the recent dry summers in order to use them for CO2 compensation and corporate green washing," says Andreas Eßer from agricultural land broker Greif & Meyer in Lohmar. For private investors, the alternative is to invest in listed forest owners such as the US company Weyerhäuser (US9621661043).
